Aug. 12 event at Katie’s Cup focuses on preventing malaria

The public is invited to hear the story Little Things Make a Big Difference: A Story about Malaria at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 12, at Katie’s Cup coffeebar, 502 Seventh St., in midtown Rockford.
The story was written by the Rev. Dr. John and Monique Nunes. Hands-on activities for children will be offered during the event.
Dr. Nunes is president/CEO of Lutheran World Relief, whose mission includes eradicating malaria in the world.
The book tells the story of a young girl in Tanzania who was bitten by a mosquito and contracts malaria as a result. Her parents carry her many miles to the nearest hospital, where she obtains treatment and survives.
While there, they learn there is a simple way to protect themselves from mosquito bites: bed nets.
Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran Malaria Initiative are partnering with Nothing But Nets to help concerned people get involved in fighting this preventable disease. Nearly half of the world’s population is at risk of malaria. Every year, this leads to 250 million malaria cases and close to 1 million deaths. Every 30 seconds, a child dies from malaria.
The event is free; donations will be accepted and sent to Lutheran World Relief and the Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Look for the Nickels for Nets campaign going on Katie’s Cup — $10 (or 200 nickels) buys a life-saving mosquito net.
The Little Things Make a Big Difference book will be available for sale at Katie’s Cup.
