Applicants sought for Weatherization Training Program

The City of Rockford Human Services Department is seeking individuals interested in training for jobs in home weatherization and energy auditing.

Applications for the program are being taken in person at the City of Rockford Human Services Department, Community Services Division, 555 N. Court St., third floor, Aug. 15-31.

The program includes four to five weeks of classroom instruction. Participants will receive training in workplace readiness, math for the construction trades and building analyst certification, and will participate in field work training, working with course instructors and weatherization auditors for hands-on experience.

The program is open to all area residents, but women, minorities, displaced union workers and people living in the 61101, 61102 and 61104 zip codes are encouraged to apply. Individuals selected for the program will earn a stipend during the training. A high school diploma or GED, drug test and background check are required.

Supportive services, including child care and transportation vouchers, will be available to eligible participants.

The Rockford Human Services Department has received a $250,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for the program. The purpose of the Urban Weatherization Initiative is to increase energy efficiency in the community and increase employment opportunities in the green jobs sector.

People successfully completing the training earn certifications allowing them to qualify for available jobs with contractors or start their own businesses.
