Morgan Street Bridge to be closed for construction for two years beginning Aug. 18

Beginning Thursday, Aug. 18, the Morgan Street Bridge will be closed for two years to all traffic for the first phase of the bridge reconstruction and replacement.
This first phase of construction will include both the replacement of the existing water main as well as the bridge’s demolition. This portion of construction will continue throughout the 2011 construction season, as weather permits.
A signed detour will be set up for those who use the Morgan Street Bridge. The deour route will be as follows:
• If you are traveling east on Morgan Street, you will turn south onto South Main Street to 15th Avenue, east to Kishwaukee Street, and north to Fifth Avenue/College; or
• If you are traveling west on Fifth Avenue/College, you will turn south on Kishwaukee Street, west on 15th Avenue, north on South Main to Morgan Street.
Access to residences and businesses will be maintained during this construction period.
The area of construction will be limited to College Avenue/Morgan Street from Kishwaukee Street to South Main Street. The total improvements of the project will include replacement of the Morgan Street Bridge, new water main, storm sewer, and some sanitary sewer improvements. New roadway, curb and gutter, sidewalks, recreational path and a roundabout at the intersection of College Avenue and Seminary Street will also be included.
The contractor is obligated to complete the project by Dec. 23, 2013.
