Saturday, Aug. 27, the intersections of Main Street and Blackhawk Street in Rockton will be overflowing with Rockton Fire Protection District Firefighters collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
Firefighters will be asking communities to fill their boots with donations from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the annual Fill the Boot campaign.
Last year, Rockton firefighters grossed $1,965 during their Fill the Boot efforts, and they are looking to outdo that number this year.
There will be some friendly competition as many departments across the region go out in the month of August, which is designated “Fill the Boot” Month for firefighters nationwide. In 2010, firefighters raised more than $27 million nationally for MDA research, equipment programs, youth camps and more.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. In addition to funding more than 330 research teams worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics; orchestrates hundreds of support groups for families affected by neuromuscular diseases and facilitates extraordinary local summer camp opportunities for thousands of youngsters fighting progressive muscle diseases.
