South Beloit Fire Department’s Corn Boil set for Aug. 27

The South Beloit Fire Department will host their annual Corn Boil and Street Dance from 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturday, Aug. 27, at Viking Lanes. This year will be a bit different as South Beloit Firefighters will be “Filling the Boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
The Fill the Boot program is a national campaign, which raised more than $27 million nationwide in 2010 for MDA research, equipment, programs, camps and more. This is the first time in a while that the South Beloit Fire Department will Fill the Boot for MDA. All proceeds will benefit local adults and children who are affected by any of the 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA.
“MDA is so excited to taking part in an event that has become a staple of the South Beloit community,” said Katryna Hogan, a fund-raising coordinator for MDA Rockford. “This is just one more in a long list of reasons that people look to firefighters as being the heroes of the community.”
The Firefighters and MDA relationship began in 1952, when a father of a child with muscular dystrophy in need of help with medical costs came to IAFF member George Graney’s Fire Engine Company 1 in South Boston. IAFF Local 718 immediately rounded up 20 firefighters and set in motion a door-to-door canister drive that raised $5,000. The IAFF has emerged as the single largest sponsor of MDA, contributing more than $435 million since 1954.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency fully funded by donations, and dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. In addition to funding more than 330 research teams worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics; orchestrates hundreds of support groups for families affected by neuromuscular diseases and facilitates extraordinary local summer camp opportunities for thousands of youngsters fighting progressive muscle diseases.
