Reminds me of a certain ex-East High school P.E. teacher who proudly trumpeted her ignorance to me over and over and over with regards to "disadvantaged" students. She repeatedly stated that sports was often the ONLY thing that they have to keep them engaged and out of trouble. WHAT A CROCK!

Basically the message this P.E. teacher stated was that these student's aren't any smarter than her...so let's keep 'em at her level.

It's a win-win...the P.E. teachers and coaches get to stay in thier jobs that can just as EASILY be done with volunteers, paras,or YMCA staff for a FRACTION of the price...and these "disadvantaged" students remain ignorant---docile---dependent on sports as thier end all be all.

Can't we do better than that, folks? I've heard that they have these things called the arts, humanities, and science. Unfortunately our immediate culture seems to discourage and penalize those who choose to become athletes of the MIND.

But maybe if a few of the P.E. teachers around here would pick up a book or two instead of clinging to thier failure and ineptitude as "pro" athletes.
