Online Staff Report
An old-fashioned Labor Day speaker will be presented at the Rockford Peace & Justice Action Committee’s first Coffee Talk of the season, at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5. The program is hosted at JustGoods Fair Trade Store, 201 Seventh St. Park on the west side in the parking lot.
Dan Kenney is an educator, activist and investigative journalist. A fourth-grade teacher in the DeKalb School District, he was named Conservation Teacher of the Year in 2010 by the DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Kenney is the coordinator of the DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace and Justice, and co-founder of Northern Illinois Jobs with Justice. He will be accompanied by a panel from that group.
Kenny is co-founder and coordinator of No Private Armies, a group that focuses on the use of private miliary contractors such as Blackwater and DynCorp. No Private Armies commented about the role of Blackwater in Jo Daviess County when the contractor had a facility near Galena.
Kenney noted he will be part of a panel to discuss current labor issues. Other guests will be: John Laesch, former Democratic candidate for the 14th Congressional District, who is a member of Carpenters Union Local 792; Dave Rathke, a former supervisor for the Illinois National Education Association (NEA); and Rose Feuer, a nationally recognized labor history professor at Northern Illinois University.
“This will be the first Coffee Talk program in a long time,” said Stanley Campbell, RP&JAC secretary. “We’ll try to host a program every first Monday at JustGoods. Your suggestions for programs are welcome.”
