Firefighter’s Ball set for Sept. 10 at Giovanni’s

Rockford Firefighters Local 413 will celebrate their Commitment to Excellence in Service to citizens at the Fourth Annual Firefighter’s Ball Saturday, Sept. 10, at Giovanni’s Restaurant, 610 N. Bell School Road. Tickets are $50 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).
The festivities kick off with cocktails at 6 p.m. and dinner starting at 7.Guests will also be treated to a silent auction, live entertainment and more. All proceeds stay local and help MDA clients with transportation, clinic visits, support groups, equipment repairs, leg braces, communication devices, a youth summer camp and more.
This year will also mark an extra-special memorial for the firefighter community and America, as two pieces of steel from the World Trade Center will be on hand almost 10 years to the day after the national tragedy.
The steel artifacts will help construct a memorial honoring 9/11 victims, as well as local members that have been lost in the line of duty. Event attendees can also purchase bricks to help construct a memorial at the event.
The Firefighters and MDA relationship began in 1952, when a father of a child with muscular dystrophy in need of help came to International Association of Fire Fighters member George Graney’s Fire Engine Company 1 in South Boston. IAFF Local 718 immediately rounded up 20 firefighters and set in motion a door-to-door canister drive that raised $5,000. The IAFF has since emerged as the single-largest sponsor of MDA, contributing more than $435 million since 1954.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. In addition to funding more than 330 research teams worldwide, MDA maintains a national network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics; orchestrates hundreds of support groups for families affected by neuromuscular diseases and facilitates extraordinary local summer camp opportunities for thousands of youngsters fighting progressive muscle diseases.
