FDNY firefighter, 9/11 steel highlights of county’s Sept. 11 memorial events

Firefighter Richard Mercado, a 13-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), will be a special guest in the community as part of the county’s remembrance of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Mercado is traveling from New York City to attend a number of events in Winnebago County in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy. He will be the keynote speaker at the 9/11 Ceremony at 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, where he will share his experience at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001, and the days after.
A welcome reception for Mercado will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon, Friday, Sept. 9, in the main lobby of Best Western Clock Tower Resort & Conference Center, 7801 E. State St.
Following are other public events Mercado will participate in during his visit:
Noon, Saturday, Sept. 10 — A guest appearance by Mercado and a piece of 9/11 steel at a ceremony and auto show at Central Christian Church, 6595 Guilford Road.
5:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 — A guest appearance by Mercado and a piece of 9/11 steel at the Rockford Speedway, 9572 Forest Hills Road, Rockford.
7:30-8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 — A guest appearance by Mercado and a piece of 9/11 steel at the Fireman’s Ball at Giovanni’s, 610 N. Bell School Road, Rockford.
8:30-11:45 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 11 — Keynote speaker at Winnebago County’s 9/11 ceremony and ground-breaking at the Winnebago County Justice Center, north parking lot, 650 W. State St.
Winnebago County’s Sept. 11 ceremony will include the reading of names of 9/11 victims beginning at 8:30 a.m.; a continental breakfast at 9 a.m.; a remembrance ceremony beginning at 10 a.m.; and the ground-breaking for the Winnebago County 9/11 Emergency Responders Memorial at the corner of Kilburn and West State, at 11:30 a.m.
