Two explosive offenses met when Rockford Lutheran and North Boone got together Friday, Sept. 9. Everyone expected the passes — and the points — to fly.

The game was impressive, but not because of the offense. The North Boone Vikings and their defense are stealing the show this season.

They topped the Crusaders by a score of 18-0. Shutting out Rockford Lutheran was impressive enough. But it was the third straight game to open the season that the Vikings have shut out their opponent.

I can’t explain it,” North Boone Coach Aaron Sullivan said. “The defense has just been playing great. They’re having a ton of fun right now, and playing with a lot of pride.”

The showing has been impressive for the Vikings. Sullivan says he knows the team eventually will give up points, but he thinks that when they do, the unit will respond that much harder on the next possession.

It was not all defense for North Boone, though. AJ Briggs did rush for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Austin Baden threw for 151 yards and also ran for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Austin’s played really well, making really good decisions,” Sullivan said.

In other area action:

• Stillman Valley imposed their will physically against Genoa Kingston, with several long, punishing runs leading them to a 49-7 win.

• Richmond-Burton gave Winnebago a wake-up call. Two turnovers by the Indians, as well as 99 yards and a touchdown by Brandon Kinsella, helped the Rockets top Winnebago 20-12.

• North Shore Country Day, and some shoddy tackling, helped continue the slide by Rockford Christian. After opening the season with a big win, the Royals have dropped two straight, losing this one 39-0.

• Christian Life dropped their game to Mooseheart 40-10, continuing their up-and-down play this season and dropping their record to 1-2.
