Livingston County Board rejects factory hog farms

The Livingston County Board overwhelmingly rejected a proposal Sept. 15 by Patrick Harms to construct two factory hog facilities near the Village of Saunemin. The vote was 18-4 to deny both facilities, which would house approximately 4,500 hogs each.
The board expressed concerns about the hog confinements’ impacts on water resources and their general incompatibility with the area’s current community growth and development.
“I’m thankful the board made an informed decision about the proposals,” said Julie Fox, a mother of three whose home is just more than 2,000 feet from one of the facilities. “The risks they pose to our air, water and public health are too great to be taken lightly.”
The board will send a resolution to the Department of Agriculture recommending denial of the applications. However, under state law, the county board’s decision is merely advisory and non-binding. The department will make the ultimate decision as to whether to allow construction by Oct. 1.
“Our local leaders deserve to be commended for their decision. They know what’s best for our community. I can only hope the Department of Agriculture respects their decision,” said Fox.
