Staff Report

Loctoberfest at Lockwood Park, 5201 Safford Road, has something to get your entire family in the spirit of the season. The Fest continues every Saturday and Sunday in October from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This Rockford Park District facility provides a country-type experience just minutes from downtown Rockford.

Lockwood Park has a variety of free or low-fee activities and entertainment for kids and adults to enjoy. Admission to Lockwood Park is free, with some paid activities.

The mission of Lockwood Park is to help people enjoy life through their connection to animals. The park programs provide a variety of experiences and learning opportunities to promote healthy, positive interactions between people and animals. Lockwood Park offers 15 miles of scenic trails for hiking, biking, or horseback riding.

Every weekend in October, enjoy: Pumpkin Paradise — pick your pumpkin for $5; pumpkin-themed games and activities; corn maze; seasonal food favorites; face painting; pony ring rides; scavenger hunt; and S’mores by the bonfire.

For the first time, a popular locally-written book comes to life during story time hayrides. The First Forest by Rockford author John Gile will be read during the hayride as guests visually take in the book’s message when the hayride enters the woods. The First Forest is available to purchase, or make a $10 donation to Lockwood Park and receive a free copy (retail value of $15). The First Forest author John Gile and The First Forest illustrator Tom Heflin will come together to autograph books for the first time in 20 years from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22.

Scarecrow Days — Oct. 22-23, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: The First Forest Story Time Hayride; Build a Scarecrow; The First Forest book signing, 10:30-2:30 p.m., Oct. 22.
