Perryville traffic signals synchronized between Harrison and Riverside in Rockford

Traffic signals along Perryville Road from Harrison Avenue to Riverside Boulevard in Rockford have been interconnected, thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Most of the incandescent bulbs have also been changed to light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
The traffic signal interconnection will allow all of the traffic signals to be synchronized by a main controller through a fiber optic line. These two improvements will reduce travel time, air pollution, energy, fuel consumption and maintenance costs. It is anticipated this increase in traffic efficiency will result in more traffic use, which should be a boost to businesses along the Perryville Road corridor.
Although traffic flow will be greatly enhanced, this does not mean motorists will be able to proceed totally uninterrupted. Factors such as vehicle speed, location and time of entry, as well as pedestrian demand and emergency vehicles, will also have an impact. The red-light stop time on some of the intersecting streets may be somewhat longer to accommodate maximum flow on Perryville.
Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen (R) said: “I want to thank County Board Members Dave Fiduccia and Dianne Parvin (District 4), and John Ekberg and Bob Kinnison (District 10), along with the Winnebago County Highway Department, for all of their help in bringing this important improvement to fruition.”
