Thanks from Mental Health Fair

On behalf of the Mental Illness Awareness Week Committee, we would like to thank everyone who helped make the celebration a success. The Mental Health Fair at CherryVale on Oct. 1, 2011, featured providers of a wide variety of health services, programs and products. We express gratitude to Amy Myers and the staff at CherryVale Mall for hosting the event and providing ongoing support. The Mental Health Rally on Oct. 3, 2011, included inspirational speeches, music and poetry by Stephen F. Vrtol III, Lou Ness, Paul Logli, Heidi Mackey, Justice Kathryn Zenoff, Paul Elmer, Mary Ann Abate, Keri Lenox, Robin Garvey, Joan Behrman and Donna Pitts. We thank the Rockford Park District and Winnebago County for their generosity in providing the space and the stage. We are grateful to RPS 205 for hosting the “Red Flags” presentation on Oct. 4, 2011, at Lincoln Middle School. We appreciate NAMI and Forest Hills Lanes for hosting Bowling for Recovery on Oct. 8, 2001. Thanks to Rockford Area Arts Council and Barnes & Noble for their support of The Art of Healing Gallery, which featured over 80 pieces of art contributed by over 30 artists on display from Oct. 1-16, 2011. Because of the hard work of the Mental Health Association of Rock River Valley and the sponsorship by Rosecrance, the Kennedy 5K Walk/Run for Body, Mind and Soul on Oct. 15, 2011, was a big success. Our appreciation goes to media sponsors WIFR, The Rock River Times, Rockford Register Star, and WNTA, who helped inform the public about the events. The purpose of National Mental Illness Awareness Week is to educate the public and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Thanks to all the hard work of everyone involved, we were able to inform the community that there is no health without mental health.
