Employment Expo Nov. 16 at Rock Valley College
Online Staff Report
CHICAGO — Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka will host an Employment Expo for Rockford-area residents Wednesday, Nov. 16. Employment Expo: Rockford is Topinka’s first in a series of events targeting unemployment and the financial stresses facing residents.
Sponsored by the Comptroller’s Office and Rock Valley College, Employment Expo: Rockford is expected to draw approximately 40 employers, including Northern Illinois University, Saint Anthony Medical Center and Woodward Inc.
In addition, the event is meant to assist in addressing the financial challenges of residents in today’s exasperated economy. Topinka will highlight those realities and her office’s efforts to provide assistance at a one-day event from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Physical Education Center at Rock Valley College, 3301 N. Mulford Road, Rockford.
Services and workshops will be available over the course of the day, including breakout sessions on résumé writing, interview skills and professional attire. There will also be presentations and information about the Comptroller’s Take Charge, Illinois, Check for Cash, and POWER programs.
Unemployment in the Rockford area is hovering around 13 percent, and many residents are struggling to make ends meet. Employment Expo: Rockford is the first of several planned Employment Expos across the state that embrace partnerships between the Comptroller’s Office and state and local vendors, businesses and associations.
As the office responsible for paying the state’s bills, the Comptroller is in constant contact with state vendors, which were recruited to participate in the Expos.
