Roscoe police officer cleared in Taser incident, charges filed against man who was Tased

Roscoe Police Officer Robert Lewis has been cleared following an investigation into his use of a Taser in an Aug. 2 incident.
Lewis observed a white male walking along Route 251 near McCurry Road Aug. 2. Lewis approached the man, identified as Anthony M. Slaymaker, 21, in an attempt to ascertain whether Slaymaker needed assistance or if his vehicle had broken down.
Upon the officer approaching, Slaymaker began acting belligerent and combative. Slaymaker refused all verbal commands given by the officer.
Lewis attempted to gain compliance with Slaymaker. When that failed, Lewis pointed his Taser at Slaymaker, who attempted to take it from him. Slaymaker was subsequently Tased and transported to the hospital.
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department was asked by Roscoe Police Chief Jamie Evans to conduct an independent investigation of the officer’s use of the Taser. After reviewing the case, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office cleared Lewis in his use of force.
Nov. 9, the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office filed charges against Slaymaker for resisting a peace officer.
