Channel 229 Club party Nov. 25 at The Office

Staff Report

Welcome back to the 1980’s New Wave music scene, brought to you for one night each year at The Office Nightclub, 513 E. State St.

It is a Black (Friday) Celebration, created nine years ago, to allow old friends to reconnect and allow guests to relive, for one night, a time that was so pivotal in many lives. The event will run from 8 p.m. to close, Friday, Nov. 25.

Playing your favorite alternative dance tunes will be Troy Vail, the original DJ from 229-Club, and John Soroka, owner and DJ from Channels in Machesney Park and later The Channel at State and Madison in downtown Rockford.

The Channel was a favorite teen haunt that attracted a New Wave generation from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. At The Channel, kids could dare to be different under the direction of owner and DJ Soroka, whom himself was an artist who played with the seminal band Ministry.

The 229 Club was a record store in the Partyland building at Five Points in Rockford. The store’s owner, Terry Mayborne, enlisted Vail and Bruce Kornerup to DJ in the club area in the back of the store. Both of these DJs fostered an environment of creativity and independent expression.

This year’s Ninth Annual Channel 229 Club party will take place at The Office Nightclub. This venue affords a top-notch sound system, a large dance floor and an amazing environment.

In addition to the great music, played by the two clubs’ original DJs, T-shirts will be available for purchase.

A portion of the proceeds from the $5 cover charge and the merchandise sold will go to another active member of the community, Noah’s Ark. This no-kill animal shelter has been finding homes for misplaced animals since 1978.
