Staff Report

Many people are concerned with buying presents and hosting family for the Christmas season, but one area church wants to help members of the community remember why we celebrate Christmas in the first place: the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is directing The Nativity: Display & Concert. This is a family event with more than 300 nativities on display from all over the world. A concert series will also feature the Belvidere North High School Choir, the Machesney Park Harlem High School Choir, Cross and Crown bell ensemble, The Flute Club of Rockford, a Spanish choir, two barbershop choirs, the Belvidere German Chorus and Light Source, a contemporary Gospel choir. Several other families and soloists from all over northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin will be performing.

The event is from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, and 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5. Free and open to the public, a canned food donation collection box will benefit the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The event will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 324 University Drive, Rockford.

Congregation members and community members in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin have loaned all of the nativities. Just more than 50 of those nativities are from other countries, where people have bought them while living abroad or vacationing. Other nativities will be separated into categories, including traditional nativity sets, tree ornaments, children’s and white nativities.

At 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 4, there will be a Christmas Devotional via satellite featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
