Man found guilty of possession of a controlled substance

Robert I. Brooks, 44, was found guilty Nov. 30 of possession of a controlled substance after a jury trial.
Aug. 25, 2010, the Rockford Police Department performed a warrant check for the defendant. Police located the defendant squatting over a clear plastic bag containing an off- white rock-like substance. This item was later determined to be cocaine by the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.
Possession of a controlled substance is a class 4 felony with a sentencing range of one to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Because of the defendant’s previous criminal history, he is extended-term-eligible, which increases the sentencing range to three to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Sentencing is scheduled for 1 p.m., Dec. 29, in front of Judge Ronald J. White.
