Climbing: Rock-climbing wall installed at Rockford’s Patriots’ Gateway

Staff Report

A rock-climbing wall has been installed at Patriots’ Gateway Community Center, 615 S. Fifth St., Rockford.

The Gecko modular climbing wall from Eldorado Climbing Walls is 21 feet high and 12 feet wide. Four climbing lanes can be used simultaneously.

The climbing wall gives both children and adults a unique option for fitness and fun. Additionally, rock-climbing can help develop problem-solving skills, teamwork and community.

Patriots’ Gateway will implement a program developed by staff called “Climbing for Success.” The program will teach climbing skills and incorporate “core values” for all who participate. Patriots’ Gateway will invite and encourage other centers and organizations to visit the center to participate in its climbing wall program.

Patriots’ Gateway Building Manager Tom Hoover has participated in a “climbing wall” training program, and will train other “trainers” for use of the climbing wall and coordinating the life skills programs.
