Left Justified: A Christmas wish list

We old bachelors rarely get what we want for Christmas. No. 1 reason is that we don’t tell anybody what we want.

So, besides an electric blanket, some warm underwear and a carton of copy paper, here’s a list:

We need a good environmental replacement for one of the outgoing Winnebago County Forest Preserve District Board members. As of this writing, rumor has it there will be an open seat, and it sure would be a sweet gift to this community to fill it with someone who cares about the greenery. The meager resources should not be squandered by “good old boy” cronyism, but should be preserved for the betterment of everyone. Only one vote is needed, and I hope our community conveys their concern (you can call the Forest Preserve and encourage an environmentalist to be placed on their board: 815-877-6100).

I hope you visit JustGoods, the fair trade store at 201 Seventh St., (open 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Mondays-Saturdays, for your holiday shopping pleasure). This is a nonprofit gift store and sells fairly-traded items from around the world.

I hope for a good turnout to see my favorite peace activist, Kathy Kelly, who will speak at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner St., four blocks north and east of Alpine and State. The program is free and open to the public.

Rockford Urban Ministries hosts its annual December peace program, and ever since 1985, brought to Rockford such notable activists as Fr. Daniel Berrigan, musician Holly Near, former Weaver Ronnie Gilbert, as well as state and local dignitaries. The program is always free and open to the public, and hosted by one of RUM’s member congregations. Merry Christmas!
