Mendelssohn Club’s scholarship and awards deadlines approaching
The registration deadline for the Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition, Monday, Dec. 12, is coming up fast!
The Scholarship Competition will be Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 (locations TBA). Students from third grade through college (maximum age 25) will compete for monetary awards in the following 12 divisions: elementary and junior piano and strings, and senior and college piano, strings, voice, and non-string orchestral instruments
A Winners’ Recital will be Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Second Congregational United Church of Christ in Rockford, where the winner of each division will perform and all competitors will be recognized.

Nominations due for Adult Starr of Excellence Award!
The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is also accepting nominations for the 2011-2012 Adult Starr of Excellence Award until Monday, Dec. 19.
The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center initiated the annual Starr of Excellence Award in 1985. The award is named after Mrs. Chandler Starr, founder and longtime dynamic president of the original Mendelssohn Club. The award recipient is selected without regard to race, color, sex, creed, or national origin, according to the following criteria:
• Has made a lasting contribution to the advancement of quality music in the Rockford area.
• Has significant involvement in civic, religious, and/or service activities.
• Has exhibited strong character and high moral values in both business and personal life.
• Can be upheld as a role model, particularly to the youth of the community.
This award, symbolized by a beautiful, personalized Tiffany crystal prism, will be presented to the winner at one of Mendelssohn’s upcoming 2011-2012 Season Concert Series performances.
