BYRON, Ill. — Auditions for Byron Civic Theatre’s production of Mister Roberts will be at 6 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Byron Middle School Theater.
Called “the greatest of war plays,” Mister Roberts takes place on a U.S. cargo ship that supplies the troops in the Pacific during the final months of World War II.
Life on board is monotonous and tedious, and the men are frustrated and bored. They hate the tyrannical captain but feel great affection for Mr. Roberts, one of the officers.
Comic incidents abound as the play centers on Roberts’ attempts to get transferred to combat duty, his relationship with his men, and everyone’s conflict with the captain.
Main roles include Lt. Roberts, The Captain, Doc (the Ship’s doctor), Ensign Pulver (a young officer who’s quite the lady’s man) and Lt. Ann Girard (an attractive blond nurse …and the only female role). Parts for up to 12 sailors, a Shore Patrol Officer, a Shore Patrolman and a Military Policeman are also available. Several parts have only a few lines, so if you have ever thought of giving theater a try, this will be a great opportunity.
The audition will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors will not need to have anything prepared for the audition other than a list of potential rehearsal conflicts.
Performance dates for Mister Roberts are Jan. 27-29 and Feb. 3-5. If you have any questions about the audition or the show, contact the director, Brian Brooks, at (815) 234-5047.
