Dec. 17 rally opposes closing of Rockford’s Postal Service processing center

A rally opposing the proposed closing of the Rockford United States Postal Service (USPS) processing center at 5225 Harrison Ave. will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 17, at the center.
The rally is organized by citizens working with members of Occupy Rockford and the Local APWU.
Rockford resident Christy Gutowski wrote in a press release promoting the Dec. 17 rally: “As a private citizen, I am against the closing of any of the national processing centers or postal stations. I have launched a national petition to bring bill H.R. 1351 and S.1688 to the floor for a vote and to oppose the current bill, H.R. 2309. Please join us in our efforts to save local jobs and make an impact on this national issue. Following a consolidation study, USPS proposed closing the Rockford facility and moving mail processing operations to Madison, Wis. The move would cost the Rockford area nearly 200 jobs and would cause delays in mail delivery to homes and businesses in the eight northern Illinois counties served by the Rockford facility — Boone, Winnebago, Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, Ogle and Lee.
A public meeting to discuss the proposal is set for 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Best Western Clock Tower Resort & Conference Center, 7801 E. State St., Rockford.

Public comments will be accepted through Jan. 21, 2012.
The Rockford mail processing center is consistently rated among the most efficient centers in the nation, and Rockford workers provide overnight delivery service to their customers in ZIP codes starting with 610 and 611.
