As many as 1,600 additional workers are expected to be hired at the Chrysler Assembly Plant in Belvidere, Ill., as the plant prepares to start production of the Dodge Dart this spring.
With more than 2,700 employees, the plant is the Rockford area’s largest manufacturing employer.
Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) will be at the plant Feb. 2 to celebrate the production launch of the Dart.
Chrysler invested more than $600 million and built a more than 600,000-square-foot body shop in Belvidere in 2011 in preparation for the Dart production.
Introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Jan. 9, the Dart will replace the Caliber on the production line in Belvidere. The Dart will be the company’s first compact sedan since the Neon was discontinued in 2005.
