Local Culver’s employees advance in national Grill Master competition
Two local Culver’s employees went to a national competition this February in Phoenix. After intense competition, Shannon Rice and Tina Teshner of Roscoe, Ill., recently qualified for the national round of Culver’s Grill Master, along with only seven other teams from across the nation.
The Sixth Annual Culver’s Grill Master will be during the annual Culver’s Reunion in Phoenix, and allows employees to showcase skills in carefully crafting a Culver’s favorite — the ButterBurger. Rice and Teshner will compete for bragging rights, cash, prizes and medals as the challenging contest finally culminates.
Beginning in July, all Culver’s restaurants were invited to have their teams take part in an initial web-based regional qualifying test, with the top-scoring 60 teams advancing to the regional competition. To be eligible, team members must complete at least one food safety training course.
Those 60 teams were evaluated in person and in action during restaurant operating hours, with only 20 teams making the cut and moving to sectionals. Those 20 teams competed in November in Prairie du Sac, Wis., leaving eight top teams, which included Rice and Teshner, to vie at nationals. Semi-final rounds were scheduled for Feb. 6. The top four teams remaining were scheduled to compete live at the Grill Master arena Feb. 7.
The first-place team receives a gold medal and cash prize of $1,500 each, with prizes awarded to the top four teams. Regardless of how they place, Rice and Teshner will bring home a plaque to display at the Roscoe Culver’s store as congratulations for placing in the elite top eight teams.
