As a citizen, I was appalled by the total lack of respect the hosts of the recent Post Office town hall had for the intelligence of the citizens of our community. As a candidate for county board, I am mad as hell. The presentation given whitewashed the reality as to what ails our great American institution. That reality is H.R. 6407: “The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act” of 2006. This “bill” was passed during a lame-duck session and by voice vote, not by roll call, so the politicians get political cover as a result. H.R. 6407 forces the Post Office to prepay their retirement fund 75 years into the future in 10 years at about $5.5 billion a year. No other government agency or private company is mandated to do this. Why the Post Office? My guess is the greedy vultures that claim government is forever bad, would love to privatize the Post Office. One speaker mentioned she sent out $30 in Christmas cards via the USPS this year, and if she had sent them via UPS or FedEx, it would have cost her about $8 per card. Call Congress and the president and demand the passing of H.R. 1351 and S. 1688.
