Regional MATHCOUNTS competition set for Feb. 18

The Rockford Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers has organized the 29th Annual Regional MATHCOUNTS Program.
The National MATHCOUNTS (www.MATHCOUNTS.org [1]) program involves sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, and was developed to inspire excellence, confidence and curiosity in U.S. middle school students through fun and challenging math problems.
The local MATHCOUNTS Program involves students from schools within the Rockford Chapter boundaries — Boone, Winnebago, Stephenson and Jo Davies counties.
This year’s regional competition will be Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Rock Valley College Woodward Technology Center in Rockford. The top two teams and top two individuals will advance to the state competition, set for March 3 at Wyndham in Lisle, Ill. The four top finishers at the state competition advance to the national competition, set for May 11 in Orlando, Fla. Four Mathletes will represent the state of Illinois in the national competition.
The following 12 area schools will participate in this year’s regional comepetition: Belvidere Central Middle School, Belvidere South Middle School, Keith Country Day School, Pecatonica Middle School, River Ridge Middle School, Warren Junior High School, Rockford’s Washington Academy, Willowbrook Middle School, Rockford’s Kennedy Middle School, Rockford’s Abraham Lincoln Middle School, Durand CUSD 322 and Rockford’s Flinn Middle School.
Following is the schedule for the Feb. 18 regional competition:
Noon-12:30 p.m. — Registration
12:30-12:45 p.m. — General instructions
12:45-1:30 p.m. — Sprint round
1:30-2 p.m. — Target round
2-2:30 p.m. — Team round
2:45-3:15 p.m. — Break (refreshments provided, parents welcome)
3:30-4:15 p.m. — Countdown round
4:15 p.m. — Awards
Parents are welcome for the refreshments, the countdown round and awards presentation.
