African-American Read-In Feb. 25 at Katie’s Cup

Amy Orvis, a fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Rockford’s Maria Montessori public school, received a Golden Apple Foundation grant to sponsor two African-American Read-In events to promote quality literature and celebrate Black History Month.
The first read-in was Thursday, Feb. 16, at the school, primarily for family members. The second read-in is a community event and will be from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at Katie’s Cup, 502 Seventh St., Rockford.
The grant money received went toward sponsoring these events, but it also purchased the classroom a large collection of quality African-American literature.
Students will read from several works by prominent African-American writers orally in the style of a reader’s theater. The students will read We Are America by Walter Dean Myers, Hoops by Robert Burleigh, a poem by Langston Hughes, and an excerpt from Christopher Paul Curtis’ beloved The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963.
After the reading, students will be available to read individually to members of the audience from the collection of books made possible by the grant.
The event is a celebration of the written word and a great way to celebrate Black History Month.
Students are making homemade desserts to serve, and coffee and tea will be provided. There is no charge to attend.
