Why would someone try to put a statement like this out their ? Then must be ill informed or have an agenda, maybe trying to introduce propaganda to discredit a move to EV's

NEVER, EVER BUY A BRAND-NEW TRACTION BATTERY TO REPLACE THE ONE IN THE PRIUS. That would be the DUMBEST thing you can ever do.

The Prius traction battery is basically a component of the electrical Power Split Device transmission. When the transmission on your 8-year-old car dies, do you buy a brand-new transmission? HECK NO.

You can buy a used Prius battery pack salvaged intact from Prii that have been totaled in accidents for like $600, which will give an 8-year-old Prius another 4+ years of service. NO NEED TO SPEND $3500!

"This will drive up costs, not only for the batteries themselves, but the electronics to control them and the electric motors that provide the mechanical force to transmit the stored electrical energy."

Allen,
Why would you think that as volume production of batteries and the associted electronics ramps up and economies of scale kick in that these would not instead become cheaper, not more expensive? When and if that happens, electric cars have the potential to become less expensive than their internal combustion engined counterparts as well as having the benefit of being cheaper to run - no gas to buy and relatively cheap to charge and less maintenance costs. No wonder that people who are invested in car dealerships and oil stocks are not happy with electric cars.
