A regional competition of the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest is set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, at The Rockford Baha’i Center, 1650 N. Alpine Road, Rockford.
Twenty students from Rockford Auburn, Rockford Guilford, Rockford Jefferson, Roosevelt, Spectrum and Freeport high schools will participate in the event.
First- and second-place winners will advance to Illinois’ State Poetry Out Loud Competition Thursday, March 29, in Springfield, Ill. The state champion then advances to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals May 13-15 in Washington, D.C., where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.
The competition, presented by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, in partnership with the Illinois Arts Council, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.
Christopher Sims will serve as master of ceremonies with George E. Davis, Dorothy Paige-Turner, Malik Yusef, Jessica MacDonald and Wilda Morris as judges. Julie Palkowski will be chief tabulator and Tricia Sheridan will be the promoter.
Attendance is free and open to the public.
