Loves Park man killed in snowmobile accident at Rockford’s Anna Page Park

Raymond A. Hedding, 24, of Loves Park was killed in a snowmobile accident at Rockford’s Anna Page Park Saturday, Feb. 25.
According to a press release from the Rockford Park District, Hedding had driven his snowmobile off the top of a dry dam, impacting the wall along the west perimeter of the park, which is at 3102 N. Springfield Ave. Hedding was then pinned underneath his snowmobile.
Hedding was airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:01 a.m., Feb. 25.
The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois Conservation Police, the Winnebago County Coroner, Rockford Park District Police and Rockford Police. An autopsy was to be performed Feb. 27.
Rockford Park District Police Chief Theo Glover said: “Snowmobile trails at Anna Page Park had just opened yesterday since there was a minimum of 4 inches of snow. These trails are well marked with appropriate signs and well groomed for riders’ safety. The area the man was riding in was not part of the marked trail system.”
Anna Page Park is the largest Rockford Park District park, containing 993.23 acres and a dry dam. Snowmobile trails originate at Lockwood Park and are only open when there is enough snow and favorable weather conditions.

The Rockford Park District Police want to remind the public to act responsibly while riding this winter, to prevent avoidable accidents and serious injuries.
• State law requires that a person at least 12 years of age and less than 16 years, or any unlicensed driver, must have in their possession a valid Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate of Competency issued by IDNR (Illinois Department of Resources) in order to operate a snowmobile.
• Snowmobile safety classes teach basic safety principles, maintenance, operation, winter survival, regulations and a proper attitude of respect for the student’s fellow person and the environment.
