Making my goal public: Walk 250 miles by Oct. 31

According to the calendar, we are still a few days away from the official arrival of spring. You would never know it, though, by this incredibly nice weather we’ve been experiencing.
With the mercury hitting the upper 60s and lower 70s, thousands of people around the stateline have taken the opportunity to get outside and get active. I was one of those who was inspired by the warmth of the recent sun and took to the outdoors to get a little fresh air and exercise over the last few days.
That, in and of itself, is not that earth-shattering, hardly worth even writing about. Here’s the scoop, and the real reason for this column. It’s been reported that if you make a goal public, chances are significantly better that you’ll succeed. Since I can no longer participate in the more strenuous summertime sports such as softball, tennis or jogging, my plan is to do some serious walking. When I say serious, I mean at least 250 miles between now and Halloween. That’s my goal. There you have it. I’ve made it public, and now it’s up to me to live up to it.
The way I figure it, I have a little more than seven months to accomplish this endeavor. That comes down to just a little more than a mile per day for every day between now and then. Granted, there will be some days I simply won’t be able to get out there and hit the streets, sidewalks, trails and/or paths because of inclement weather or other commitments. Then, there will be other days when I’m sure I’ll do more than the required minimum. All in all, I’m thinking it really is an attainable goal.
I plan on keeping a walking log. I’ve got a notebook that I intend to write down the distance, time, location and any other interesting tidbits about the walk. I’d like to invite anyone reading this to join me in this challenge. Keep your own log, and send me an e-mail to let me know how you’re doing. I’ll give an update on my progress periodically here in my column.
Stephen R. Covey, the author of the best-selling book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, states that it is important to purpose, plan and persevere to reach a goal. I’ve done the first two. Now, onto the third — and most important — step. I’m headed out the door to persevere!
