March 15 MoveOn rally at East State, Mulford to target federal housing funding policies

Local MoveOn.org members will hold a “Save Our Homes” rally at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 15, in front of Chase Bank at the corner of East State Street and Mulford.
The following is from a press release from event organizers:
“The 99 percent keep winning! In the last two months, we pushed President Obama to launch a full investigation into the Wall Street banks and got a promise from his administration to allow the Bush-era tax cuts to expire. But even with these huge wins, millions of homeowners are still underwater on their mortgages and need immediate assistance.
“60 percent of homeowners have their mortgages through government-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But the agency that oversees this program is run by Bush appointee Ed DeMarco, who refuses to allow underwater homeowners to adjust mortgages to reflect real home values.
“President Obama has the power to make sure Fannie and Freddie change their policy to provide relief to the 10 million Americans struggling with mortgage debt.
“That’s why on Thursday, March 15, we’ll rally in front of Wall Street banks, at the homes facing foreclosure, and in city squares to let the public and media know that the 99 percent is standing up to save our homes. We’re sinking in underwater mortgages — throw the 99 percent a lifeline to keep us in our homes.
“The 99 percent is just beginning our work this spring. In April, we’ll help train over 100,000 people to take nonviolent direct action in April; and on Tax Day, we’ll demand that corporations and the richest 1 percent pay their fair share. We’ll also hold corporations accountable at dozens of shareholder meetings and move millions of dollars from Big Banks to community banks.
