Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum in Rockford March 19; Mitt Romney a possibility, too

Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., will visit the Venetian Club in Rockford at 9 a.m., Monday, March 19, the day before the Illinois primary.
According to a release from the Winnebago County Republican Central Committee (WCRCC), Santorum supporters will hold a rally for the Republican presidential hopeful at the Venetian Club, 2180 Elmwood, Rockford.
The WCRCC release also said another Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, may make a stop in Rockford the afternoon of Sunday, March 18, for a meet-and-greet with supporters.
Earlier reports had indicated former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich would be visiting Rockford. However, the WCRCC release said Gingrich would not be making an appearance in Rockford as “it appears circumstances surrounding the upcoming primaries in the next 10 days have resulted in changes to his schedule.”
Romney holds the lead in the race for his party’s nomination for president with 15 states won, 431 delegates earned and 3,472,365 votes garnered. Santorum has won 10 states, 168 delegates and 2,282,245 votes; Gingrich two states, 135 delegates and 2,101,951 votes; and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, zero states, 25 delegates and 949,207 votes.
A March 16 Rasmussen Reports poll in Illinois showed Romney at 41 percent, Santorum at 32 percent, Gingrich at 14 percent and Paul at 7 percent.
Polls in Rockford will be open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 20.
Locally, Winnebago County Republicans will celebrate on election night at Giovanni’s Restaurant, 610 N. Bell School Road, Rockford. Candidates, supporters and voters will gather beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 20.
The Winnebago County Democratic Party will host its election night party at Electrical Workers Union Hall, 6820 Mill Road, Rockford, beginning at 8 p.m., Tuesday, March 20.
Winners in the March 20 primary will appear on the Nov. 6, 2012, general election.
