Roof of vacant Midway Theatre in downtown Rockford collapses
Online Staff Report
The roof of the long vacant Midway Theatre in the 700 block of East State Street in downtown Rockford has collapsed.
The collapse occurred in the early afternoon Friday, March 23, causing a portion of East State Street to be closed. The street has since been opened to traffic, and no injuries were reported in the collapse.
Police had closed a portion of East State so city fire and building officials could inspect the property to determine if it posed a continued threat to passing motorists and pedestrians.
A portion of the sidewalk in the 700 block of East State remains blocked off by yellow tape.
The office of the Rockford Area Arts Council, which is next door to the theater, was evacuated and closed as a result of the possible danger posed by the collapse.
