River Action cleans up fast and impressively! In just about three hours, from 9 a.m. to a little past noon, the Quad Cities environmental group, River Action, cleaned out an entire quarter-mile slough, extending from the Mississippi to near the mouth of the Rock River. Formerly blocked by fallen trees and log jams, the slough just off Rock Island’s Sunset Park and Marina is now clear for canoeing and kayaking. Pictured are: front row, left to right: River Action Program Manager Dan McNeil, Leo McNeil, Walter Blackman, Chloe Kilty, and Frank Martin; back row, left to right: Tammy McDonald, Candice Vroman, Joe Weiltispach, Sarah McGlynn, Shawn Kilty, Dean Mathias, Jeff Leonard, and Rock River Trail Illinois Coordinator Dave Druen. The mission statement of River Action is as follows: “Dedicated to fostering the environmental, economic, and cultural vitality of the Mississippi and its riverfront.” The group has also established many area water trails, including one at the mouth of the Rock River, and worked on the portage around the Milan, Ill., Steel Dam and the Hennepin Canal on the Rock River.
