Cubs’ bullpen wastes 2-hit effort from Dempster, loses 2-1 to Nationals in opener

Kerry Wood walked three in the seventh and Carlos Marmol gave up two hits and one run in the eighth as the Cubs wasted a two-hit effort by starter Ryan Dempster to lose to the Washington Nationals 2-1 at Wrigley Field on Opening Day Thursday, April 5.
Dempster gave up two hits, one run and three walks while striking out 10 in 7 2/3 innings.
Cubs newcomers David DeJesus and Ian Stewart both registered hits in the loss, with Stewart also scoring the Cubs’ only run after hitting a triple in the fourth.
The Nationals’ bullpen of Tyler Clippard and Brad Lidge gave up just one hit while striking out two over two innings of work to secure the Washington victory.
Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg registered 7 innings, giving up five hits and one run while striking out five and walking one.
The Cubs’ next game is at 12:05 p.m., Saturday, April 7, against the Nationals. Scheduled starters are Gio Gonzalez for the Nationals and Matt Garza for the Cubs.
The Chicago White Sox open their season on the road against the defending American League champion Texas Rangers at 1:05 p.m., Friday, April 6. Scheduled starters are John Danks for the White Sox and Colby Lewis for the Rangers.
