Online Staff Report
Seventeen-year-old Rockton Hononegah High School student Regina Oakes of Roscoe was killed and two passengers were seriously injured during a one-vehicle crash at around 9 p.m., Friday, April 13.
The two-door Ford Oakes was driving flipped and crashed into a tree on Southgate Road, north of Elevator Road, near Stone Creek Elementary School in Roscoe. The crash was reported at 9:18 p.m., and Oakes was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:32 p.m.
The two passengers — Sarah Andrews of Roscoe and Lindsey Smith of Rockton — are expected to survive the crash.
Andrews was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. She is listed in fair condition.
Smith suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to SwedishAmerican Hospital.
In a press release April 14, Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said an autopsy would be performed on Oakes April 16, but that Oakes “had multiple blunt trauma to her head.”
Fiduccia said toxicology reports would be available in approximately two weeks, but she did not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Winnebago County Sheriff’s police are investigating the accident.
