Online Staff Report
Bobaflex returns to Bar 3 in downtown Rockford Thursday, May 10. Show starts at 8 p.m., and also features The Last Nova, Heart-Set Self-Destruct, Illusion’s Fate, Devils in Angels, Spin Cyco and The Broken Fall. Admission is $10.
Bobaflex was established in 1998 by brothers Shaun and Martin McCoy. The brothers are no strangers to the press, having ancestral ties to the most infamous family feud in American history, between the Hatfields and the McCoys, which almost caused a war between the states of West Virginia and Kentucky in the 1880s.
The band features Shaun McCoy on guitar and vocals, Martin McCoy on guitar and vocals, Chris Grogan on guitar and vocals, Tommy Johnson on drums and Jerod Mankin on bass and vocals.
According to Shaun McCoy, the band’s name was inspired by Star Wars bounty hunter Boba Fett.
The band is playing a handful of shows leading up to its appearance at Rock on the Range in Columbus, Ohio, May 19, where they will headline the Jager Stage.
The band’s current album has been spurred by the radio hit “Bury Me with My Guns On,” and the second single, “Chemical Valley,” has also done well. The third single is a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence,” which will be going to radio soon.
After the chaos of the bankruptcy of the band’s record label, many had written Bobaflex off. However, their constant touring and new label are being recognized by some media outlets. The band was recently featured in Revolver and Outburn magazines. They also completed a two-month co-headline tour with Royal Bliss.
