At approximately 1:46 a.m., Sunday, May 13, Illinois State Police District 16 responded to a motor vehicle crash on U.S. Route 20 approximately three-quarters-of-a-mile west of Willow Road in Jo Daviess County.
The investigation found a red 1996 Chevrolet S-10, driven by Cullen E. Connors, 17, of Apple River, Ill., was traveling east on U.S. Route 20. The Chevrolet apparently traveled into the west-bound lane and struck a 2007 Freightliner truck tractor head on. The Freightliner was traveling west on U.S. Route 20, and was driven by David J. Bloedow, 42, of Fon Du Lac, Wis. The Freightliner lost control after the collision and entered the south ditch, where it struck a utility pole, causing power lines to land on top of the Freightliner’s tanker trailer. Bloedow’s vehicle then caught fire, but Bloedow was able to exit safely.
Connors suffered fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Connors was not wearing a seatbelt. Bloedow was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital by Stockton Ambulance, where he was treated for injuries and released. Bloedow was wearing a seatbelt. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
No citations have been issued. Illinois State Police District 16 continues to investigate the crash and a crash reconstruction has begun. Assisting agencies included Illinois State Police District 1, Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Jo Daviess County Coroner’s Office, Stockton Police Department, Stockton Fire Department, Stockton Ambulance, Warren Police Department and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
