Rockford East High student arrested after stolen handgun found in backpack

A 16-year-old Rockford East High School student has been arrested after a stolen handgun was found in his backpack.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 17, Rockford police working at East High School, 2929 Charles St., Rockford, recovered a loaded handgun in the backpack of a student. The handgun was determined to be stolen.

An unnamed juvenile, 16, of Rockford, has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm (younger than 18 years of age) and possession of a stolen firearm.

The juvenile was taken to the Winnebago County Juvenile Assessment Center.
