Woman charged with first-degree murder of 7-day-old child who died as a result of premature birth, maternal cocaine use

Jan. 18, 2011, Rockford police detectives responded to Rockford Memorial Hospital in reference to a death investigation. Upon arrival, detectives met with the medical staff of the hospital and personnel from the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. Detectives were advised a 7-day-old child had died.
An autopsy was conducted by the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office. The results of the autopsy indicated the cause of death was premature birth and maternal cocaine use.
Rockford police detectives conducted a lengthy investigation. May 17, the facts of the investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office and Tina M. LaMonica, 37, of Rockford, was charged with first-degree murder.
An arrest warrant was obtained for LaMonica with bond set at $1 million.
