Man sentenced to 10 years for November 2011 burglary of BJ’s Place

George Clarke, 44, pled guilty to burglary May 21 and was sentenced to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by Judge Rosemary Collins
Nov. 21, 2011, officers with the Rockford Police Department responded to BJ’s Place after being called by the business’ security company. Once on scene, officers saw one of the windows on the south side of the business was broken. After speaking with the owner, officers watched a surveillance video that showed a suspect, later identified as Clarke, enter through the broken window, grab several bottles of liquor and exit back out through the window.
The defendant was wearing a dark-colored jacket with a graphic design on the back, gloves, a hoodie and white shoes. A couple of hours later, a security officer, who had stayed behind at BJ’s Place, contacted the police because he had seen the suspect on a bike wearing identical clothing as the suspect in the video. The defendant was located by police and taken into custody.
Burglary is a class 2 felony with a sentencing range of three to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. However, because of the defendant’s prior records, he was subject to class X sentencing, which changes the penalty range to six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
