Online Staff Report
Rockford Park District is hosting a “Trolley Good Time” event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Trolley Station in Riverview Park, 324 N. Madison St., Rockford, to celebrate the opening of the Park District’s Trolley and Forest City Queen summer season.
The Park District is co-promoting this event with the Rockford Public Library’s summer reading club kick-off event, which is taking place across the river behind the Main Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“This ‘Trolley Good Time’ summer kick-off is an affordable event for the entire family,” said Ice Facilities Manager Julius Rankins. “It’s also a great opportunity to learn a little history about Rockford, cruise the Rock River, and enjoy time on the ice at the Riverview Ice House.”
Be part of the “River, Rail & Rink Special,” where the entire family can enjoy a riverboat cruise on the Forest City Queen, take a trolley ride, or skate at the Riverview Ice House. Board Trolley Car No. 36 at the Trolley Station, ride along Madison Street beside the scenic Rock River Recreation Path, travel to the Symbol, then turn around and return to the Trolley Station. Trolley Car No. 36 is also available for private rentals throughout the summer.
A 45-minute cruise on the Forest City Queen provides an up close and personal glimpse of some of the most stately homes gracing the banks of the Rock River. A variety of cruise options will also be available this summer, including hourly narration tours, lunch cruises, private rentals, family-style picnics, Ski Broncs performances, and elegant dining options.
Other highlights include Rocky the mascot of Riverview Ice House; tours of the Jr. IceHogs off-ice training facility; an Atwood Birds of Prey presentation from 11 a.m. to noon; YMCA’s inflatable obstacle course; and free Pepsi samples from the Pepsi Street Team.
New this season, rent a bike and take a ride. The Rockford Park District has teamed up with Paddle & Trail to provide this new opportunity. Paddle & Trail will provide the bikes for rent June 2-October at the Trolley Station during normal operating hours. Single or tandem bikes are $10 per hour, $25 for a half day and $50 per day.
