Volunteer Plug Planting Day

Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge, Hennepin, IL, Start:June 9, 2012 9:00 am

End:June 9, 2012 12:00 Come help install “plugs” (seedlings) of native species in the refuge’s prairie and wetland areas to increase the biodiversity of these unique habitats. Your help will be especially important in areas where the Initiative is working to restore rare wet meadow. Bring a water bottle and a sack lunch; tools and training will be provided. Please wear appropriate clothing for fieldwork (e.g., long pants, closed-toe shoes). Children 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by parents or other chaperones. Meet at the parking lot by the Nolan Observation Tower at 8:45 a.m. Please e-mail us if you plan to attend.

Summer of Paddling

The Izaak Walton League of America is partnering with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, and other state, federal and local partners are organizing the 2012 Summer of Paddling: 1 River, 10 States, 100 Events. Paddling events will be happening on the Mississippi River all summer. Find an event near you or register your paddling event as an SOP event at www.sop2012.org.

Event Description: Participants can assist in cleaning a 26.5 mile stretch of the Platte River, which flows into the Mississippi River. The water course is divided into 7 sections. Participants will be dropped off and picked up following their float trip. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a tremendous resource while cleaning the River.

Event Description: Bring your picnic lunch and enjoy a great time on secluded shores of the Mississippi River–right in town! Our 24′ Voyageur canoes will carry you down to the 34th Street Flats where you’ll enjoy a sandy beach, a great view, and the company of new friends!

Our trips are accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background or ability. Discover the National Park that exists right in the heart of the Twin Cities Metro area. Used by American Indians for food, trade, and water long before Europeans visited the “New World,” the Mississippi River helped shape the Twin Cities’ ecology and culture. Explore the river and its history in our 24-foot Voyageur canoes, which hold 6-10 paddlers.

Family Rafting on the River: Brooklyn Park

Cost: $45 per person. Boats provided: We use large rubber river rafts that fit up to 12 people.

Event description: Spend the day floating and paddling down the Mississippi River in a large rubber raft. Experienced naturalists will guide the way, and there will be several stops to explore islands, sandbars, and beaches. Discover river life and see the river as you have never seen it before. Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair: Grafton, IL

Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Pere Marquette State Park, five miles north of Grafton, Ill. on Illinois Route 100.

This free event is co-sponsored by IL DNR Pere Marquette State Park, which and Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge. Fair goers will learn knot tying, fish identification, fish cleaning, casting, and many other skills, plus earn lots of free gifts and prizes!

A special addition to the 2012 Fishing Fair is the Paddling Demo. Children and their parent/gardian will learn paddling safety and have the opportunity to paddle in the Pere Marquette State Park Harbor. Approx 20 minutes per paddling pair.
