Man guilty of May 2008 murder, sexual assault of woman

Edward Johnson, 33, was found guilty June 7 of four counts of first-degree murder, two counts aggravated criminal sexual assault and two counts of criminal sexual assault after a jury trial in front of the Judge Rosemary Collins.
May 17, 2008, Rockford City Police officers were dispatched to 210 W. Jefferson St. in reference to an injured person. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased white female, later identified as Vicki Fannin, lying on her back with a large pool of dried blood approximately 2 feet from her head.
An autopsy revealed Fannin died as a result of traumatic cardiac arrhythmia resulting from blunt trauma to the head.
A sexual assault evidence collection kit was completed at the autopsy, and testing at the Illinois State Police Crime Lab revealed there was semen that was determined to match the DNA of Johnson.
Johnson was previously convicted of aggravated criminal sexual assault Nov. 4, 1997, when he grabbed a 13-year-old girl off the street near Noble’s and dragged her to another location, where he severely beat and sexually assaulted her. That attack ended when police arrived and the defendant attempted to flee. He was apprehended, charged and convicted.
First-degree murder is a class M felony that has a sentencing range of 20-60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Aggravated criminal sexual assault is a class X felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. However, because of the defendant’s previous record, the sentencing range increases to mandatory natural life. Criminal sexual assault is a class 1 felony with a sentencing range of four to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. However, because of the defendant’s previous record, the sentencing range increases to natural life.
Sentencing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., July 20, in court room 478 with Judge Collins.
