Alonzo Russell, director of Fatally Unique — the dance crew that made it to the semi-finals of America’s Got Talent — will be a guest choreographer at this summer’s ArtsPlace program.

ArtsPlace is a program of the Rockford Area Arts Council for youth ages 14-18 who are serious about the arts. It is supported through grants, business and service club sponsorships, and individual contributions.

For Russell, it will be a homecoming of sorts — he was a youth apprentice on the ArtsPlace Dance Team when he was in high school for two years.

While he studied at Rock Valley College, Russell worked for the Arts Council as a dance instructor for after-school programs. This summer, he will work with his former teacher, Tamara Newquist.

He came in with his game plan for becoming a professional entertainer,” said Sharon Nesbit-Davis, education/community engagement director ofthe Rockford Area Arts Council. “He thought ArtsPlace could be a good stepping stone and began asking questions. He interviewed us.”

In addition to dance, the 2012 ArtsPlace teams are Jewelry & Journaling with Tricia Sheridan; Painting with Maya Simmons; Printmaking with Bruce McDonald; Sculpture with Marco Basurto; and Theater with Richard Raether.

ArtsPlace runs Monday-Thursday, June 18-Aug. 9, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Rockford College Clark Arts Center. Applications are being taken until seats are filled.
