Academy Award winner among judges for student film festival; deadline June 16
Online Staff Report
In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the Mosaic Student Film Festival (MSFF) has announced panel members for its Aug. 4 event at the Rockford Theater at Rockford Woman’s Club, 317 Park Ave.
The three panel members for this year’s fest are Academy Award-winning filmmaker Dan Lindsay, Producer/Director Igor Kasyanyuk and 2010 & 2011 MSFF winner and filmmaker Miles Allen. All have strong backgrounds in the art of filmmaking as well as strong ties to the Rockford.
“We couldn’t be happier with this year’s panel,” said Jerry LaBuy, MSFF director and programmer. “Dan is a Rockford native who has a national and international filmmaking presence and was a panel member last year. Igor is a very talented commercial producer/director who works for the GrahamSpencer company right here in Rockford. And Miles is a two-time MSFF winner who has continued his work in the Los Angeles filmmaking scene.”
College and high school students from all of Boone, Winnebago, Ogle and Stephenson counties are encouraged to submit their work to the festival. Films for the Aug. 4 event must be mailed in by June 16. The films selected for the event will be announced July 15 and screened at the event Aug. 4. Doors will open for the event at 6:30 p.m., and the screenings will begin at 7 p.m. Full submission information can be found on the MSFF website (www.mosaicfilmfest.com).
After just four previous festivals, MSFF has grown into an event that goes beyond Rockford and has generated interest with student filmmakers from around the world.
“We have had a growing amount of films from outside the Rockford region,” said LaBuy. “It really shows how after just four short years, something we started right here is making waves outside the community. This has brought some terrific national and international student films right here to the Rockford area.”
Tickets are $5, and can be purchased at the entrance of the Rockford Theater beginning at 6 p.m. on the night of the event. Ticket sales from the night of the event will help support the Mosaic Film Project and local charities. Door prizes will be offered to people who bring items for donation to the local Rockford Rescue Mission or make a monetary donation on the night of the event to the local charities that the Mosaic Student Film Festival supports.

All of these are designed to mentor and help young student filmmakers create not just films, but a positive impact on their community. For more about MFP, visit www.mosaicfilmproject.org.
