June 14 event to address ‘Challenges in Adolescent Behavioral Health’

Registration is open for an all-day conference titled “Challenges in Adolescent Behavioral Health,” which is jointly sponsored by Rosecrance and Rockford Health Council.

The conference is set for 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, June 14, at Giovanni’s Conference Center, 610 N. Bell School Road, Rockford.

The conference features noted experts in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and substance abuse, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders in adolescents.

As a board-certified psychiatrist with Rosecrance Health Network, Dr. Michael Kuna, M.D., treats adolescents and adults with all types of psychiatric illness, including mood, anxiety and thought disorders. Kuna will speak about substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in adolescents.

Denise Styer, Psy.D., treats adolescents and adults with eating disorders, self-injury, trauma and high-risk behaviors. As director of the Center for Eating Disorders and the Center for Self-Injury Recovery Services Outpatient Programs at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital, Styer helped develop the day hospital program. She has given many presentations about recognizing the self-injuring adolescent, treatment and family involvement.

Margaret Wehrenberg, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist and an expert on the treatment of anxiety and depression. She has extensive training and expertise in the neurobiology of psychological disorders and is co-founder of the Reflex Delay Syndrome (RDS) Research and Training Institutes. Wehrenberg will discuss how to effectively treat panic and worry in adolescents. In addition to clinical work, Wehrenberg has written articles for The Pyschotherapy Networker magazine as well as four books, including The Anxious Brain.

The cost for this conference is $60, which includes training materials, continental breakfast and lunch, 6.5 CEUs for social workers, nurses and counselors, LMFT and IAODAPCA. CPDUs are offered for teachers. Seating is limited, so early registration is advised.
